The Idea
Sitting down together one afternoon for lunch overlooking the ocean, we discussed how we could create our own exhibition "happening" working outside the traditional gallery system. The idea was exciting and something we both wanted to try together. After many weeks of meeting and discussing the idea (even after we located our venue and set the date) we finally hit on a theme that we both wanted to dig into. That idea became "Our Creature Comforts" a collection of stories, imagery, and thoughts revolving around our intuitive connection with the creatures that surround us in our every day.

As we hammered out ideas for the exhibition, the idea of documenting the painting and exhibition process came up. Suzanne has a web camera on her website where people can watch as she works from all over the world and both of us have done live demonstrations of our painting techniques. Always, these get a great response and encourage inquiry and discussion between us and audience. We wanted to try and take this to a new level and create a documentary of our though process, creative process, and how we pull it all together into an exhibition.

Suzanne Clements and Reneé Decator teamed up to create a series of work rich with color and whimsy. Each artist brings to the canvas her own personal style, stories, and interpretations of the theme. Reneé is well known for her striking colors and painterly expressive style. Suzanne's work traditionally reflects a more subtle realistic approach however, in this series, she has opened up with a freer and more animated style.
Their new, experimental body of work has forced both artists into previously unknown territories.

The book features 32 paintings created for the upcoming "Our Creature Comforts" exhibition along with the accompanying stories. All books will be signed by both artists.

Edited by Carla Kucinski and includes forewords written by Karen Westmoreland Luce and Shawna Serig Kelsch.
